Reporoa Valley Traders & Awaken Cafe occupies a unique spot along the Thermal Explorer Highway, blending the practicality of a local hardware, fencing, plumbing supply store and post office with the familiarity of a village café. This mix makes it less about being a destination for just coffee and more about a slice of everyday rural life in Reporoa.

The cafe itself feels quietly welcoming, especially for travelers looking for a genuine country break or locals stopping in for essentials and a bite to eat. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, favored by residents who appreciate straightforward service and reliably good homemade treats. It’s not a bustling urban espresso bar, but a place where the community's pace sets the tone.

Food-wise, the offerings lean on hearty, homemade pies and cakes that speak to local tastes. The chicken, cranberry, and brie pie often comes recommended, alongside a caramel slice and carrot cake that locals and visitors return for again. Coffee is noted as a solid cup—good enough to keep people lingering a little longer with a friendly chat or while waiting on hardware supplies.

This spot is best suited for:

  • Travelers on the Thermal Explorer Highway needing a genuine pit stop with both sustenance and practical supplies.
  • Local farmers, tradespeople, and residents dropping by to combine errands with a refreshing coffee break.
  • Anyone who enjoys café food with a homemade touch and isn’t seeking the polished ambiance of a trendy city spot.

Visiting in mid-morning or early afternoon tends to offer a nice balance—there’s enough action to feel part of the community rhythm, yet it doesn’t get overcrowded. The café's friendly service and the easy familiarity make it simple to settle in for a quick coffee or a longer pause if you’re passing through or collecting supplies.

Overall, Reporoa Valley Traders & Awaken Cafe works as a versatile local hub—part shop, part café—where the everyday and the unexpected meet: a solid chicken pie, a quick postal errand, or a quiet moment with a great slice of cake and coffee. For those driving the Thermal Explorer Highway, it’s not just a stop; it’s a small window into the day-to-day life of this part of New Zealand’s countryside.

As you are driving down the Thermal Explorer Highway there’s an unassuming sign for a turn off for a ‘cafe’, you will not regret following this sign to the Awaken Cafe! The cakes and pies are sensational, and the service is just as good. I didn’t expect to find a chicken pie this good or a carrot cake I went back for more of a few days later. Whether this is on your route or you have to go out of your way to get here, it is well worth it!

Nice chicken mushroom pie. The cafe is patronise by a lot of locals means it’s a good cafe.

Great little place with excellent home made food. Bacon and egg slab, chicken cranberry brie pie and the ginger slice were excellent. It's well worth a stop.

Saw the sign on the highway on our way to Rotorua in the hopes of finding a nice place to stop for a cuppa and a slice of cake. But we weren’t prepared for just how delightful this little place would be. The Chicken, Cranberry and Brie pie was so good we had to order another. The coffee was great, so too the carrot cake. All home made! The staff were very friendly, and we will be going out of our way to return.

Loved this place. Had great coffee, a delicious sandwich, and bought a new drink bottle. Coolest of all - the owner makes greeting cards, and they are an NZ Post agent - so I got to post a card to my son. It's in the letterbox now. He'll see it when he gets home from school. What an unexpectedly awesome thing to get to do. I'd go back just for the coffee and cards. A really lovely experience and great customer service.
